Sense and Sensibility
Jane Austen
Everyman's Library No. 51, 1992
This lovely vintage hardback edition of Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen is part of the prestigious Everyman's Library series published by Alfred A Knopf. Featuring dark green cloth-covered boards , a sewn binding and green ribbon marker, this collectible edition includes an introduction by literary scholar Peter Conrad, a select bibliography and a very useful chronology which places key dates of Austen's life side by side with the literary context and historical events of the time. The condition of the book itself is excellent with no creases, tears, annotations or other markings - it appears to be unread. The original glassine dust jacket however has what looks to be a little scribble on the back flap - please see pics - and is a bit brittle with age, showing signs of a split and some nibbles.
This novel follows the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, as they navigate their ways through love, loss and the societal expectations of early 19th century England. First published in 1811 anonymously by 'A Lady', this was Austen's first published novel and helped to establish her as a key literary figure.
A classic, still.
