Of Human Bondage
by W. Somerset Maugham
First published in 1915, this edition of Maugham's heart-wrenching novel was published in 1988 by Michael Cavendish as part of the Great Writers Library Series. This series of hardcover books was a well-curated collection of 50 hardback books which aimed to introduce readers to some of the most renowned works of English literature. They were designed with the collector in mind, featuring decorative bindings and often including illustrations or portrait frontispieces. In keeping with the rest of the series, this edition of Of Human Bondage is a quality production. It has a sewn binding with dark red leatherette boards, gilt embossed titles and patterned paste downs. It also has an unused printed bookplate, making it suitable for gifting. This book is in very good condition, with no creases, tears or annotations. There is very slight age tanning along the top and front edge of the text block, but it is minior and in my opinion does not detract - please see pics.
Maugham's novel has influenced generations of writers. His unflinching depiction of flawed characters and painful life lessons sets it apart from the more romanticized novels of the era. If you are interested in an honest exploration of human emotions, motivations and inner conflicts, then this is a must read.
" The day broke grey and dull. The clouds hung heavily, and there was a rawness in the air that suggested snow."
